Rev. Tegga LendadoFirst of all, I would like to thank EthioCross for posting this song on its website.

It took me a few seconds to figure out whether the message was to be read or to be heard. I guess that was due to my unfamiliarity with the website.

As a former servant of the Mulu Wongel Church, I was elated to see the signs including the emblem, the simple cross, the ragged building, the signage, the national flag and the message of invitation, "Come Unto me, all of you who are heavy laden for I will give you rest." Mt:28.

I usually wake up at 4:00 AM for my morning prayer and devotion. Following this, I spend a few minutes surffing the internet for news and email messages. Today though, I was mesmorized by this very song and started to remenese the good old days of the Mulu Wongel Church's inception and infancy. I ponderd how the Holy Spirit movement covered the land from the center to the four corners of the country like a wild current California forest fire. I wondered how the devoted the Spirit-filled believers of all ages and walks of life were determined to live for Jesus and share the gospel. This song took me back to those days when we were under severe persecution by the Emperor's quasi-ecclesistical bureaucrats, some of our own "conservative" Evangelicals, the street gangs, etc. The youthful temptation of the flesh, the extravagant promise of the world, and the constant struggle against evil spirits would have consumed the young under-descipled believers. It was a time of no compromise; you PENTE are or you not. In the heat of the pressure from the antigonistic society, one would have packed and joined the majority. But not so with the Mulu-Wongel believers, empowered by the Holy Spirit. They paid the price of carrying their cross. Forty years later they are still singing the song of renewed commitment and victory, "Where could/would I go from You, for You give meaning (taste) to my life; you are water(spring) and Lord of (my) life."

Some time in 1977, I chaired a song editing committee of about 7 wonderful members for the church. Our function was to see to it that the words were spiritually uplifting, biblically/doctrinally sound, culturally appropriate, musically synchronized and whether the songs were congregational, solo, choir in delivery as well as whether they were inspirational, devotional, worship, prayer, praise driven.

Most songs originated from churches or choir members. It was taboo to commercialize gospel songs then. Both the individuals and their talents belonged to the church they were members of. I do not know any royalty received or paid to an individual author or a singer, aside from, may be some honorariums. Nominal revenues collected from benevolent doners were given to the church for its mission expenses.

I am sorry that I am carried away by the sequence of events in the Ethiopian church music development and this is not the place for it.

If I were to rate this song, I would give a high A for its lyric and A plus for the musical coordination. To me, the song's message is simple, clear and timely: pointing to Jesus, the help of the Holy Spirit and depicting my weakness and demonstrating His power to keep me in His eternal salvation. It is in line with the word of God proclaiming His faithfulness.

The beats and rythms are not dominant and overpowering the words such that one may sing along in his/her time of private or corporate prayer or worship.

May God bless the Mulu Wongel Church Choir.
