SFWPlease, post in here my previous comment on the Tanzanian Lutheran Church's position on homosexuality. It may make more sense here than there. The same is true with the second person's comment. Doing so might open a wider discussion for the Ethiopian church with which you and I are more concerned.

The issue of homosexualism is only a scratch on the surface of the lager problem of the liberal Lutheran churches including Mekane Yesus. By enticing the weak and unelearned believers with their lax life, Lutheran and liberal pastors have swelled their churches with ill-informed, mis-led and unquestioning believers in the Diaspora churches. One of the church growth gimmicks they use is what they call "conferences". Conference meetings are intended to draw a larger crowd for revival, evangelistic outreaches, raising funds or love-gifts for their favored ministers, mainly from Ethiopia, isolate and attack or warn or tame challenging members, introducing the latest fashion of a ministry gift to the public such as slaying in the spirit, contageous laughter, exorcising evil spirits from believers, offering personalized prophesies such as promises of healing, financial blessings, marriage or engagement promises, job promises, cheap miracles, etc. Customers flock to churches for such baits during conference meetings. One such pastor recommended holding a well planned conference over a concerted prayer when I asked him to pray for my church. He promised to bring his entourage including his choir, soloists and bands if organized a conference. I did not appreciate the offer.

This trend developed with the current Wagnerian "apostolic" movement which took root among the budding Ethiopian Diaspora fellowships in early 1980s. Unique among the problems with this movement within the Ethiopian Diasopra is the tolerance of sins. Cheating and stealing and getting-rich-quick are considered smart and cool.

Homosexual tendencies are well tolerated if not promoted in some circles. Pastors do not have time or make time to teach against those sins and behaviors. Genuine repentance and growing in the grace and knowledge of the word of God are not to the advantage of the modern pastors who do not want to work to support themselves and their families. Ministry has become a short route to making easy money collected from such abused believers. Eduation and knowledge is not a requirement. A call to ministry is not a criterion anymore. Once a minister makes his way to be a member of the pastors' association, then s/he is on his way to prosperity. The pastors' association ordains and breeds such scruplous pastors.

Back in 1991, I confrtonted a casual church-goer who accused a famous Ethiopian preacher/prophet, of molesting children in Sunday school. My reaction was simply, zim bel, beYesus sim, wushetam.... Both the accuser and the pastor are of similar background. I wish I had confronted the pastor then.

I am writing this not just for the fun of it. I have been praying about it for decades. I have been saying that there is sin in the house of God today, more than ever. My fingers shiver and my eyes are heavy with tears as I convey this. I am nervous and agitated. I do not take joy in talking about sin in God's house. I fear God and love my people, the people of God. I am praying that God would raise a Nehemiah or a Paul to lead us into a genuine revival of the day.

I stand here as a blood-bought sinner that homosexuality is not only sin but also a neo-homocidal act. The Lutheran Church should condemn it unanimously, confess its sin and repent. The Daispora church pastors, mainly from the Mekane Yesus denomination should denounce their stance and do the same. Otherwise, the Mekane Yesus church should alinate itself from these greedy pastors who fester on the ignorance of their flocks. The principle is universal. Tanzanian Church should also do the same, I believe. May God bless us all.

"We believe that concerns are best worked out through church-to-church relationships rather than through public statements," he said.

To bigin with, a society of religious clubs that endorses any sin, let alone sadomy, a sin that provoked God's anger cannot be a called a church. Serious individuals who call the name of Christ should disassociate themselves from such a society. If they are engaged in such sin, I believe they can plead God's forgiveness and mercy in repentance.

The above statement given by the leader of a church is like words form a diplomatic emmisary. They may be polically correct but not biblically. Accepting such a society as church and negotiating with it on equal standing is already degrading the Church of the Lord, Jesus Christ; it is devaluaing sanctity of marriage and opening doors for negotiations of all sins. Thus, the gospel becomes a commercial commodity for a highest bidder. The smarter negotiator will sell the church to Satan. Leaders should be very careful and weigh their call, motives and actions as they can easily lead astray their congrigations. No negotiation can replace repentance. Just preach the pure and full gospel. Do not dilute it with your political middle ground position. There is no middle ground when it comes to the gospel of Jesus Christ. You are His follower or not; you are saved or lost; you are a true biblical church or a religious club. Mind that you are called to serve God as His minister, not Mammon, the god of this world, money.

I personally faced similar decison as a servant of God in a different denomination. I am still paying the price of my call and stance; but that is the nature of the call and the message of the gospel. Please, teach the truth; live the gospel truth; there is no sense in adultrating the message of the Cross. Live it or leave it!

Do not be scared of public statements. It purifies the church and keeps you in shape. Jesus never concealed the hypocracy of His time. Why should we now?

With love and prayer.
