Ethiopian Charismatics Strengthen Catholic Ties
Zenit.org ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia :- Faced to growing numbers of charismatics in Ethiopia, Catholic leaders are expressing openness to welcome this movement, and offering catechesis to strengthen ties with the Church.
The charismatic movement has been drawing in an increasing number of young Catholics, Orthodox, and Protestants, especially in Addis Ababa, and the leaders of the different churches are reacting in variant ways.
Aid to the Church in Need has been working with Catholic leaders, especially in the Addis Ababa Archdiocese, to reach out to the young charismatics by planning programs to offer Catholic teaching, including a special emphasis on the Eucharist, Confession and Marian devotion.
Bishop Lesane-Christos Matheos, an auxiliary of that archdiocese, told the aid agency that the charismatic, or neo-Pentecostal worship style "attracts young people, gives them direction and challenges them -- it helps cultivate the life of young people to live their faith."
However, he noted that some of the Catholic groups -- the communities tend to follow ecumenical lines -- lacked thorough grounding in Church teaching, since few priests or catechists have been involved with the movement members.
The prelate said that "some [priests] are suspicious of the charismatic renewal because of similarities with Pentecostal groups."
The Pentecostals of the early 20th century were known for splitting off and forming new denominations, whereas current charismatics tend to stay within their churches.
Embrace
The bishop expressed the belief that "it doesn't help" to abandon Catholics who join the charismatic movement, as this "would bring a great negative impact." Rather, he said, "we need to embrace it."
He noted that leaders from the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, the largest Christian denomination in the country, have recently clamped down on involvement with this movement. However, the aid agency reported that the Orthodox Church has seen declining numbers as more people seek out the Pentecostal worship style.
Bishop Matheos said that the Catholic Church, which only has some 800,000 members in Ethiopia, is developing new initiatives to reach out to the charismatics.
He explained that steps are being taken so that "it grows as a proper movement of the Catholic Church."
The aid agency is supporting a specific program to train leaders of the Charismatic Renewal.
The prelate noted that through the new programs implemented by the archdiocese, the young people are being more integrated with the Church.
Authenticity
The archdiocese developed a five-year pastoral plan that includes sending lay Church leaders to other countries such as Uganda or India "to see the authentic charismatic movement," the bishop said.
He added that charismatic groups will be invited to teach leaders to reduce some of the "unhealthy spirituality" that can be found in members.
Bishop Matheos explained that a potential problem is "over-emotionalism: Emotion is not bad, God communicates through emotion, but we don't want just emotion; we also need to involve the mind."
He said that another problem is that "some people have the feeling that only charismatics are saved -- it is an extreme way of thinking."
"The charismatic renewal movement mustn't become a ghetto," the prelate said. "It needs to be inclusive."
Bishop Matheos affirmed: "Sometimes the Spirit reveals itself in the charismatic way, but it also works in another way. They have to open their eyes to see the spirit leading the church in other lay activities."
The aid agency reported that a revised and expanded version of the Life in the Spirit seminar -- a basic Catholic charismatic teaching course -- which includes teaching on areas where there may be doubt, such as the Eucharist, is now being used by some groups in Ethiopia.

Charisma is a word from Greek language that came from Charis which means grace.
The grace of God is for all baptized people and calling certain group cahrsmatics is another divisive title.Dr Graham was also mentioning the same by accepting charisma for all baptized children of God.
Som Catholics witnessed that the carismatic movement helps them to love St Mary more wow!The Charisma ,gift of Holy Spirit accprding to the Bible glorifies Jesus the foudation of our Chrstian faith.
Of course the postive attitude of Ethiopian and Erirtrean Catholics towards unity with other chrstian groups is to be appreciated but the real fllowship by theleaders is still controversial. The joint declaration by the liberal Lutherans and the Catholics is not surpassing paper agreement as Batican never allows communion with any others who call themseselves chrstian except their only one CATHOLIC church!
Ethiopian catholics should be commended for their openess and readiess for such fellowship with other chrstians but all the fellowship or youcall it Charismatic have to be for the glory of God the Father His Son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.Any movement that gives emphasis more than the message of the Cross is chaos not charismatics. The so called money preachers decivers can not represent the grace of God which is the free gift of God that can not be purcahsed by any human money or acts. Ephesians 2;8
Again we declare according to the bible, salvation by grace of God only through faith in Jesus led by the Holy Spirit.
Charismatism in the Catholic church might have a lot to do with emotions rather than the filling with the Holy Spirit as the Pentecostals such as the Mulu Wongel Church and other Protestant/Evangelical churches teach and practice. Such might be the case in Latin America where the Catholic church lost its dominance to the Charismatic movement which later ended up embracing liberation theology/neo-communism.
The Roman Catholic Church, if it is to be a church of Jesus Chrst indeed, needs to work on its doctrines of salvation where Martin Luther departed before claiming Charismata or spiritual gifts. Sola Scriptura! Sola fide!
The Pope should apologize to the Ethiopian people for the attrocities His church condoned during the last wars with the Italians. I do not see how Charismatism could survive in Catholicism. As the bishop said, it might be mere emotional excercise of the spirit, the human spirit (?), but not that of Holy Spirit. So, I agree with him in questioning the authenticity of the movement iself.
It is intesting that the bishop tries to minimize the whole Pentecostal experience as a mere emotional movement that split denominations. The Holy Spirit filled movement in Ethiopia covered the entire empire from Jinka to Ginda (Eritrea) and from Wolega to Harargie within a decade, a task the whole foreign missionary enterprise could not accomplish in a century. The gospel was preached to the poor and lives were affected. Many converts came from outside of the so-called "Chrisitan" tradition. It is very ubfortunate that the bishop does not appreciate the fact that the present astronmical church growth we see is as a result of such an impromtu wave of the Holy Spirit's work in the lives of the faithful few. Many kalichas, followers of traditional religions, atheist communists, Muslims and of course, nominal Christians also came to receive salvation through Jesus Christ.
Contrary to the bishop's claim, the neo-pentiecostal movement in Ethiopia wrought unity among the churches. It is unfortunate to see the doctrine of filling with the Holy Spirit as mere worship style rather than life-style.
Bishop Matheos affirmed: "Sometimes the Spirit reveals itself in the charismatic way, but it also works in another way. They have to open their eyes to see the spirit leading the church in other lay activities."
I admire the bishop for the above affirmation. When His servants fail to preach and teach His word, God chooses to send His Spirit to His people. As such the leaders are left behind to follow the people. They react instead of proacting. It is like revolution in politics. However, I would like to differ from the bishop that the Holy Spirit is not reactionari
