Presbyterian leaders approves gay clergy policy
AP:-MINNEAPOLIS – Presbyterian leaders voted Thursday to allow non-celibate gays in committed relationships to serve as clergy, approving the first of two policy changes that could make their church one of the most gay-friendly major Christian denominations in the U.S. But the vote isn't a final stamp of approval for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) or its more than 2 million members.
Delegates voted during the church's general assembly in Minneapolis, with 53 percent approving the more liberal policy on gay clergy. A separate vote is expected later Thursday on whether to change the church's definition of marriage from between "a man and a woman" to between "two people."
Such changes must be approved by a majority of the church's 173 U.S. presbyteries before they can take effect. Two years ago,
the assembly voted to liberalize the gay clergy policy — but it died last year when 94 of the presbyteries voted against it.
Under current church policy,Presbyterians are only eligible to become clergy, deacons or elders if they are married or celibate. The new policy would strike references to sexuality altogether in favor of candidates committed to "joyful submission to worship of Christ."
"What this is about is making sure we uphold what
Christ taught us, to not judge one another," said Dan Roth, a church elder from Sacramento. "We will no longer have to tell our brothers and sisters in Christ that they lie about who they are."
But critics said the move toward more liberal policy would simply create disputes and bad feelings in Presbyterian churches nationwide.
"If we are once again conflicted with this question in our presbyteries, all the air will be sucked out of the room," said the Rev. William Reid Dalton III of Burlington, N.C. "All the other things, the important issues we need to consider will not considered."
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) is ranked the 10th-largest church in the U.S. with 2.8 million members, according to the National Council of Churches' 2010 "Yearbook of American and Canadian Churches." The church's media materials tout 2.1 million members.
Several major Christian denominations have voted in recent years to allow non-celibate gays to serve as clergy if they are in committed relationships. Among them are the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the U.S. Episcopal Church and the United Church of Christ.
Benjamin Wind, a nonvoting young adult delegate to the assembly from Syracuse, N.Y., said Presbyterians of his generation greatly favor the change.
"The world has become a more tolerant and accepting place," Wind said. "I've grown up with gay and lesbian friends, teachers, even spiritual leaders. They stand proud as people who deserve the same rights as all human beings."
Leaders of the Presbyterian Renewal Network, a conservative group within the church, said allowing non-celibate gay people to serve as clergy would amount to "removing the moral standard for our ministers."
Other delegates warned that liberalizing such policies would put the Presbyterian church in opposition to its cohorts in other parts of the world, where the denomination is seeing much of its new growth. Delegates also are considering removing the threat of punishment for clergy who perform same-sex marriages in states where it's legal.
"I fear for the partnerships we have built around the globe," said the Rev. D. Matthew Stith, pastor of Community Presbyterian Church in West Fargo, N.D.

The sad thing is that some of our Ethiopian churches in the Diaspora are being supported and paying allegence to their doctrines directly or indirectly. The word of God is clear about such errors to be rooted out and the erroneous teachers to be exposed, all for the sake of the integrity of the gospel.
The parallel problem we are facing with the conservatives is that they do not seem to know what they conserve. Certainly, not the teaching (doctrines) of Christ. They prefer conserving slavery, colonialism, racism and apartheid to teaching the pure gospel of salvation through Jesus Christ only. The African American churches also tend to teach reactionary view instead of the pure and full gospel. We need the mighty move of the Holy Spirt-centered revival, like that of the old Mulu Wongel in Ethiopia.
If one preaches 'Christ and Him crucified', they mark the person as radical and extremist. Many have opted to go slow and mellow. Why suffer persecution?, they say. They focus on the "Worship" and positive thinking as though there is anything negative about the gospel. They preach an amalgam and diluted message of the gospel enticing people to prosperity, get quick-rich schemes and lies. The church has stopped being the body of Christ in such circles and has become "NGO" and social entertainment club.
Would the Son of Man find faith, true faith that requires utter obedience to to God's word?
Lord have mercy!
The issue of sdomy is clear as per the scripture that it is seen that people have to repent from their sinful actions.Ofcourse there are some people wth coplex sexual oreintations that they confessed that they can not develop opposite sex attraction but rather same sex attraction. These people are very few while most of the sodomy /Gay people are reaching such life style because of their promicsus behavior.
In relation to this issue , it is not approperiate to relate the issue to our Ethiopian unique situation where most Ethiopians in the church or out side the church denoince sodomy. When it comes to those so called chrstians practising sodmy, all are included with ourt any exception including the pntcostal leader who was dissmiesd because of his affair with male prostitute. The revival in Ethiopia is not a property of one specific denomintion.God was using those people from various denominations during the great awakening or revival in Ethiopia. There was the revelation of fire in West Ethiopia in those days among Ethiopian Presbyterians who later joined Lutherans.
Therefore ,we have to be very careful as not to relate this evil practise in Europe and USA to Ethiopians.
When it comes to justice, mostly the liberals are very active in the advocasy while conservatives have more people who can not accept equality of color, race and gender.
As Ethiopian /African , I am conservative by faith but democratic liberal in politics.I can't be comofortable with those calling themselves chrstian who refuse equality of gender, race and color.

The word of God is being eroded piece by piece in those derailed churches and denominations. I participated in a denominational review committee several years ago in another denomination. The review committee split in half on the issue of homosexuality. Of course, my position was clear. I opposed homosexuality, slavery and racism as a conservative Bible-believing Christian leader. The proponents of homosexual ministers argued that they were defending the rights of blacks, homosexual, sinners and the disabled individuals. I argued blackness or race had nothing to do with homosexuality, the subject under discussion. We are all sinners whether we are homosexual or not. But, condoning one sin would lead us to condoning another and we would eventually be condoning all sins. Murder, rape, theft, lying, etc., condoned the world would be unliveable. Without the fear of God and morality, human beings are but dangerously cunning animals. Man's conscience is the only constraint left in a vaccuum. That is why Jesus said, You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free. The Bible tells of Jesus, who is the truth that can liberate the vilest sinner. Homosexuality, adultery, murder may all be in the hearts of all unregenerate sinners. God hates their sin but loves them to the extent of redeeming them through His Son. They must hear of this unconditional love. Let us share the good news. Believers are forgiven sinnsers only trying to tell of their stories of God's saving grace. We are not judging the sinner but the sin that separated the sinner from His Creator. God is Holy and requires His children to be holy also because His attributes are imputed to them.
Serious ministers and devout Christians may need to consider abandoning the PC-USA and join the PCA, a more "conservative" wing of the Presbyterian Church. Reconciliation for unity may not be possible as long as the group is advocating for the sin of homosexuality, not the homosexual sinner. It is one thing to love the sinner and quite another to the sin.
May God have mercy on us all!
